Montreal Gazette & National Post: Kids & Cell Phones
The Montreal Gazette and the Toronto based National post both carried the same story about a new paper by Hardell et al. that purports to show an increased risk for certain brain tumors from long term use of cell phones. The study claims the risk is particularly acute for children. A follow up story appeared the next day in the Gazette. It is curious that Canwest is the only English language mass media outlet worldwide that we could find that carried a report about the latest Hardell et al. paper.
Follow up story Montreal Gazette
The Montreal Gazette published a follow up story the next day in which the reporter quoted Health Canada as saying it "currently sees no scientific reason to consider the use of cell phones as unsafe. There is no convincing evidence of increased risk of disease from exposure to radio frequency electromagnetic fields from cell phones."
Health Canada also pointed out that this conclusion is similar to the positions of the World Health Organization, the International Committee on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection and the European Union's Scientific Committee on Emerging and Newly Identified Health Risks.
